On Thursday, December 4, at 9 a.m., the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) was dispatched alongside partners at the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) to a traffic accident on Interstate 25 near the Circle Drive exit.

CSFD Engine 4 arrived on scene at 9:03 a.m. to a traffic accident with injuries. While firefighters were providing patient care, a car, uninvolved in the original traffic accident, struck a firefighter. The firefighter was immediately transported to a local hospital in stable condition with multiple injuries. Additional CSFD units were dispatched to the scene to take over patient care for those involved in the original traffic accident.

All information regarding the traffic accident will come from CSPD. More information can be found on the CSPD Blotter.

CSFD wants to remind the community to take extreme caution while driving, not only during winter conditions, but at all times when emergency vehicles are present. Below are tips on how to keep first responders and road crews safe:

  • If emergency vehicles are present, move into another lane to create a buffer zone between your car and the emergency vehicles and crews.
  • Decrease speed when there is a stopped emergency vehicle with flashing lights.
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions to stay aware of your surroundings.
  • During snowstorms where the weather impacts roads, increase your following distance to give plenty of time to stop. Additionally, never assume roads are clear of ice and travel with caution.
