The Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) Trackchair program aims to provide sustainable access for all to our parks and open spaces. This program utilizes all-terrain mobility devices to assist visitors with mobility challenges in exploring the trails and open spaces in Colorado Springs.
This program, a part of the Therapeutic Recreation and Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOPS) programs, will remove barriers and allow visitors to explore designated trails not suitable for regular wheelchairs. To ensure the safety and comfort of participants, each unit is equipped with rear stability wheels, powered reclining chairs, a four-point harness, and attendant controls for volunteers or Park Staff to assist with maneuvering.
Items you may wish to bring:
- Water
- Any medication/medical supplies
- Additional clothing layers
- Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hat)
- Snacks
- Camera
Important Information for Hike Participants:
- Chair Transfers: Park staff are not able to assist with transferring individuals into or out of the Trackchair. Participants must be able to transfer independently or bring at least one companion (maximum of five) to provide assistance during the transfer and throughout the hike.
- Weight Limit: The maximum weight capacity for the Trackchair is 250 pounds.
- Age and Fit Requirements: Participants must be at least 5 years old, properly fit into the Trackchair, and be able to use all required safety equipment. If these requirements are not met, staff reserve the right to cancel the hike.
- Weather Policy: Hikes may be canceled by staff due to forecasted or actual adverse weather conditions.
Pet/service animal policy
Due to the inherent risk posed by the Trackchair itself, and a concern for the safety of your pet or service animal, Trackchair operators are not permitted to possess pets/service animals while operating the Trackchair. It is not recommended that pets or service animals accompany you on your trip, however if it is necessary to bring your pet or service animal on the Trackchair trip, they will be required to be kept under the control of an accompanying friend or caregiver. Pets are required to be on a leash and under control in the City of Colorado Springs unless posted otherwise at areas within specific parks.
